VALLEJO, Calif. — The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) Board of Education has approved higher daily rates for substitute teachers, a move designed to keep the district competitive, attract more qualified candidates, and reduce reliance on costly outside contractors.

At a recent board meeting, Human Resources presented the proposal, emphasizing balancing the district’s budget while maintaining fair compensation and supporting students with consistent, high-quality instruction.

The Board of Education unanimously approved the following new substitute pay rates:

  • Day-to-Day Substitute Teachers: $300/day (formerly $230/day)
  • Long-Term Substitute Teachers: $310/day (formerly $265/day)
  • Credentialed Retirees: $335/day (formerly $280/day)

“These changes show our commitment to ensuring students have consistent, dedicated teachers in their classrooms,” Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Matt Chamberlain said. “By raising our substitute teacher pay, we can attract more qualified professionals and strengthen support for our schools.”

VCUSD actively seeks substitute teachers and invites community members with a bachelor’s degree to apply. Those who enjoy working with children and want to make a difference in their community are encouraged to join the substitute teacher pool.
